MS Dhoni has hit back at his critics, saying the captaincy was a responsibility he was given and not something he craved or clung to. In the aftermath of India's successive ODI defeats and subsequent series loss to Bangladesh, Dhoni said he would love to give up the captaincy if that guaranteed a change of fortunes for India.
"I am really enjoying my cricket," Dhoni said when asked of his captaincy plans, before making plain his annoyance at the media scrutiny. "I know this question was coming. I know the media really loves me. These are the questions that will keep popping up.
"Yes, if it is a justifiable thing that if you remove me and the Indian cricket will start doing really well, and if I am the reason for all the bad that is happening to Indian cricket, definitely I would love to step away and play as a player. Ultimately you want India to win. It doesn't matter who is the captain. I was never really in line to become a captain. It was a job or responsibility for me. I have taken that responsibility. It was given to me, I took it. If they want to take it away, I am happy to give it away.
"What is more important is to play for the country and contribute to the team and try to keep the dressing-room atmosphere good. So that whenever youngsters are coming in, they can come and perform. That will be the ultimate achievement for me. Also, it is slightly different. Indian cricket had been used to players coming in toned, ready for international cricket. Now it has changed. You have to grind it through. Cricket has changed and all that. We have had tough times. That's what cricket is all about. You can't win every series you play."
It was interesting that Dhoni said he would love to step aside as captain and play just as a player. For as a pure batsman, Dhoni has not been in great form. His last match-winning performance with the bat came in July 2013, when he won India a triangular-series final in the West Indies. Until that match, he used to win a Man-of-the-Match award once every 13 games. He is currently 38 matches without a match-winning innings.
One of the reasons for that is Dhoni has chosen to take the extra responsibility of batting at No. 6. In the second ODI, though, he came in to bat at No. 4. He showed glimpses of the old Dhoni in scoring 47, but as India kept losing wickets at the other end, he kept getting slower and failed to kick on in the end. He hinted that this could be a long-term shift, and that it was perhaps time a good batsman took that responsibility of batting at No. 6.
"The whole idea was for me to go up and play more freely," Dhoni said. "The last four-five years, I have batted at 6, and there is always some kind of pressure other so I have not been able to bat freely. I wanted to get set and bat freely, but when I got set we lost wickets. Then we had to build some kind of partnership before we could go after the bowlers, then again we lost a couple of wickets. It was not really possible.
"I would like to bat slightly up in the order so I can play a bit more freely. Yes I have adapted to what the team needed of me since 2006, but for the longer run it is important for us to see who is a good batter at No. 6, at 7 or even maybe 5. That is why I dropped (Suresh) Raina (down the order). He has been successful at that slot.
"If I move up there, it should be someone experienced at that slot. It is a difficult slot. You can't just go out there and play the big shot. You don't really have as many big batsmen behind you. If an opener plays a big shot. he thinks twice, but if you are No. 6 or 7 you have to think three times or you don't think at all because you are not worried about anything else."
One of the occupants of that lower-middle-order slot has been Ravindra Jadeja. Now Dhoni has always backed Jadeja, playing an important part in using him as a match-winning bowler in Tests when nobody rated him in the longer formats. Since his shoulder injury, though, Jadeja has struggled a bit in international cricket.
That Jadeja plays for Dhoni's IPL team and that he is managed by Dhoni's friend's management agency has always been brought up, and once again, Dhoni was asked about his persistence with and "preservation" of Jadeja. An unflustered Dhoni came up with a cricketing assessment.
"We use every bowler according to his potential," Dhoni said. "I don't like to bowl him in the first 10, but after that he has bowled for us consistently, in the second Powerplay and even in the slog. I have used him late in the innings, and he has bowled three decent overs in the Powerplay. I feel it is very difficult for someone like him to justify his selection because more often than not they don't get to bat. In the last one year even I have not got a decent chance to bat. The only decent chance you get is when you are four-five down in 20 overs.
"To always come in an international game and expect an individual to score a fifty is not really possible, so it is a difficult one. Also, our top order has done really well so we haven't tested the bottom order. You can say these two matches our lower order was tested so it is difficult for him to justify his batting. From bowling point of view, in between he was up and down, but later on, during the World Cup he bowled well and after that here he is bowling well."
Another issue with India in the transition since the World Cup has been to identify a coach and proper supporting staff. When he was asked if there was a correlation between the uncertainty there and the results in Bangladesh, Dhoni did not lose the opportunity to praise the former coach Duncan Fletcher.
"At least indirectly you are saying you are missing Duncan Fletcher," Dhoni said. "I felt he was one guy who was never really appreciated by the media. He did all the hard work. He was with the team for a long time. He went on really tough tours but I don't think we should blame the support staff. Ultimately it is the individuals that go out and adapt and do what is required. I don't think it is the support staff.
"If you are indirectly hinting that we need a coach and all that, we have enough people in the support staff to take care of us. And even if the position of the coach is vacant for some time, it is okay. Don't put just anybody there just because the post is vacant. Then it will have a bad impact in the long run. It takes time to make these decisions, and our team generally doesn't have that time because we keep playing non-stop."

If I'm the reason for Indian cricket's ills, I'll quit: Dhoni

Bangladesh 200 for 4 (Shakib 51*, Ashwin 1-32) beat India 200 in 45 overs (Dhawan 53, Mustafizur 6-43) by six wickets (D/L method)

Mustafizur Rahman was the hero in Mirpur again, (off)cutting through India's batting with a six-wicket haul to add to his five-for on ODI debut, and launching Bangladesh to their first ever bilateral series win against India. Mustafizur's 6 for 43, the second best figures by a Bangladesh bowler in ODIs, skittled India for 200, before Shakib Al Hasan steered the chase with a busy fifty, his second on the trot.
With this six-wicket win, Bangladesh also cemented their place in the 2017 Champions Trophy. An overjoyed Mashrafe Mortaza, who has been a part of each of Bangladesh's five victories against India, toasted his team's "big achievement".
Mustafizur struck with the second ball of the game, having Rohit Sharma drive away from the body to point for a duck, before coming back to dismiss Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni and Axar Patel in a decisive batting Powerplay that yielded three wickets for 17 runs. When Mustafizur got R Ashwin, he became only the second bowler after Zimbabwe's Brian Vitori to claim five-fors in his first two ODIs.
Mustafizur clapped till his hands hurt and he was mobbed by his team-mates. Mirpur raised itself to a big roar, lapping up its new hero. He would return after the rain break, which caused the target to be revised to 200 in 47 overs, to immediately bowl Ravindra Jadeja via a deflection off the pads.
Bangladesh had a brisk start to their chase, slicing 71 runs off the target in 15 overs. Tamim Iqballobbed Dhawal Kulkarni to slip for 13 off 21 balls, Soumya Sarkar was pinged on the badge of the helmet, and there were edges aplenty, but all of it was brushed aside.
Though Soumya was not in fluid touch, with drags and heaves counterbalancing the orthodox drives from the previous game, he added 52 with Litton Das. The spinners briefly helped India claw their way back, Sarkar and Litton falling within four overs of each other. Ashwin, aided by close catchers, preyed on Bangladesh with sharp turn and extra bounce. Dhoni tried to manufacture a game with his spin quartet but Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim, who was spilled by Raina on 9, assumed charge and added 54 in 9.5 overs.
By the time Mushfiqur was run out for 31, the asking rate was under three, and eventually Shakib 's calculated 51 off 62 balls put the seal on the landmark win with 54 balls to spare.
However, it was Nasir Hossain who had set the stage for Bangladesh earlier. After trapping Virat Kohlilbw in his second over with a skiddy ball to end a 74-run partnership, he beat a well-set Shikhar Dhawan in the 21st over. Nasir went on to complete his quota for only the second time in ODIs, conceding 33 on both occasions.
Kohli's 27-ball stay was an indifferent one. He missed out on a couple of half-volleys and even absentmindedly offered a back-foot defence to a free-hit.
Upon Kohli's dismissal, Dhoni hiked himself up to No.4 for the first time since July 2012. He began positively, unleashing a jabbing punch off the sixth ball he faced and sent it blazing through the off-side ring. He followed it with a similar shot for a similar result off his tenth ball. Soon Dhoni and Dhawan traded caps for helmets and kept the scorecard ticking, taking India to 100 by the 19th over.
Despite the early loss of Rohit, Dhawan was fluent from the outset, lashing four fours on the off side, including successive drives off Mashrafe in the tenth over. He brought up his fifty off 54 balls but perished soon after when he charged down the track to Nasir and edged to Litton, who had taken over the gloves from Mushfiqur for this match. Litton had managed to redeem himself after dropping Dhoni on 20 three balls earlier.
Ambati Rayudu, who replaced Ajinkya Rahane, did not last long and departed for a duck in the 22nd over. Taskin Ahmed and Mashrafe took a cue from Mustafizur and suffocated India further by pulling some pace off the ball.

Space trading game Elite: unsafe is to be launched on 16 December. The latest sequel to the powerful game will go on wide release after months of testing by those who backed it on Kick starter. After launch, the game will face stiff opposition from other space-based games at present in growth.

Many of those offer players very similar experiences to the fighting, trading and exploring in deep space seen in Elite. Plans to create the fourth installment in the Elite sequence of games emerged in November 2012 when the project appeared on Kickstarter seeking to raise £1.25m to develop the game.

Elite: unsafe is being made by Cambridge shire-based Frontier Developments, the game studio headed by David Braben who co-developed the unique Elite game. He supposed he used Kickstarter because it would have been hard to get a publisher to back the plan.

The December release date is later than originally planned and the game will initially only be playable on PCs. A Mac version is due to follow three months after the original release. Frontier is planning an event on 22 November at which some players will get a gaze at what the finished game will look like.

NICK GRIMM: It was former prime minister John Howard who took on the gun lobby in 1996 in the wake of the Port Arthur massacre, first announcing and then clinching an agreement with the states for nationwide gun law reforms.

Well, almost 20 years on and in the wake of another violent tragedy, Mr Howard is responding to those who believe the deaths at the Lindt Cafe could have been avoided if Australians were allowed to carry concealed weapons.

Most notably, the federal parliamentarian Senator David Leyonhjelm commented earlier today that John Howard's gun laws make Australia a "nation of victims" because people can't properly protect themselves.

Mr Howard told The World Today's Alexandra Kirk the senator's statement isn't correct.

JOHN HOWARD: It's a very simplistic and flawed analysis.

The gun laws that were brought in in the wake of Port Arthur have made Australia a safe country and there's very strong, properly based research evidence to the effect that gun-related homicides have fallen in this country, the incidents of mass shootings is lower than what it was, and around the world, those laws are praised and seen as a model for other countries struggling with gun violence to emulate.

So I don't agree with the Senator. I respect his attitude on other issues and agree with it but I don't agree with him on this.

ALEXANDRA KIRK: If you apply Senator Leyonhjelm's argument to this week's siege in Martin Place, which is presumably what's prompted him to say this, the suggestion is that if one of the hostages had been armed, in other words, had a concealed gun, they could have protected themselves against the gunman.

JOHN HOWARD: That's an example - with the deepest of respect of generalising from a particular set of circumstances - the truth is that in countries that have laxer gun laws, the likelihood of people who obtain a gun legally then using it for murderous, even terrorist purposes is much greater.

There's no country in the world that can have a system of gun licensing and registration which can guarantee that somebody who gets a licence and buys a gun in accordance with the law won't later on use that for a purpose perhaps he or she never had in mind when the gun was purchased.

It's just an exercise in logic to understand that the more guns there are in the community, the greater the likelihood of mass murder.

ALEXANDRA KIRK: Are you worried about a resurgence of the gun lobby sort of arguments in the wake of the Martin Place siege this week?

JOHN HOWARD: No, I don't think so because most Australians are sensible. They understand that the fewer guns there are in the community, the fewer gun related deaths there will be. Most Australians accept and understand that.

There are some who don't and I understand their view. I don't accept it, I don't agree with it but it's their right to have that view. I don't think there is going to be a resurgence of attempts to roll back those laws.

I'm confident that at both the federal and state government level, any attempt to roll back the laws would be resisted.

ALEXANDRA KIRK: You think Australians now accept that you were right and people like Senator Leyonhjelm are wrong?

JOHN HOWARD: Well, I'm not trying to turn this into a debate between myself and the Senator. I say I agree with his stance on some other issues but I have been convinced for a long time that what my government did way back in 1996 has made Australia a safer country and that's the constant feedback I get from the Australian people and it's also the view of many Americans.

I have a lot of contact with Americans and I talk quite a lot about this issue to them and overwhelmingly, from both sides of the political divide, Republican and Democrat, individual Americans are unhappy with the gun laws in that country.

ALEXANDRA KIRK: You and Senator Leyonhjelm share some similar views about small government, personal freedoms, so why do you say that those arguments then don't extend to gun ownership?

JOHN HOWARD: Well, every issue is different and my very strong view is that the safety of the public is better guaranteed by as fewer weapons being in circulation as possible.

I would like to see fewer weapons in the Australian community, not more, and I'm convinced from applying common sense and also from the experience of other countries, sadly the United States is the most prominent example, the more guns there are in circulation, the greater likelihood there is that they're going to be used to kill people because you can never guarantee that a seemingly sane, calm person who's got a license to hold a weapon can then, not at some time in the future, go berserk and use it.

ALEXANDRA KIRK: Do you think there needs to be another concerted effort to further reduce the number of guns in the community?

JOHN HOWARD: Well, that is one of those operational day to day matters that I will leave for the state and federal governments.

I'm out of government now. I've chosen to talk about this issue today because of my association with Australia's gun laws and because I have a strong view that what was done in 1996 made our country safer.

And we are all shocked and saddened by the terrible events of a few days ago but it's very important in the wake of that terrible event for us to keep calm and understand what the right responses are but to also understand what the wrong responses would be and I don't think a right response is to make guns more freely available in the community.

ALEXANDRA KIRK: Mr Howard, thank you.

JOHN HOWARD: You're welcome.

NICK GRIMM: And that was the former prime minister John Howard, speaking to Alexandra Kirk.

John Howard: gun laws make Australia safer, not a 'nation of victims'
